Fertigation Guide
Water-Soluble Fertilizer for Drip Irrigation: Commercial Buyer Guide
Why Fertigation Demands Specialised Procurement
Commercial drip and micro-sprinkler irrigation systems represent a significant capital investment — and the fertilizers injected through those systems must meet strict purity and solubility standards that standard granular fertilizers simply cannot satisfy. Distributors and national buyers serving greenhouse operators, commercial fruit producers, and high-value vegetable growers need to understand the technical specification requirements of water-soluble fertilizers — and the supply chain considerations that are unique to this product category.
This guide covers grade selection, EC and pH compatibility, emitter safety, procurement parameters, and the supplier qualifications you should require when sourcing water-soluble fertilizer for commercial drip irrigation supply chains.
What Makes a Fertilizer "Drip Irrigation Compatible"
Not every fertilizer labelled "water-soluble" is safe for injection into pressurized drip irrigation systems. The key technical requirements are:
| Parameter | Requirement | Risk if Failed |
|---|---|---|
| Solubility | ≥ 99% complete dissolution at 20°C | Precipitates block emitters |
| EC (1% solution) | Max 1.2 mS/cm | Salinity damage in root zone |
| Insoluble residue | Max 0.05% | Filter and emitter blockage |
| pH (1% solution) | 3.5 – 7.0 depending on grade | Precipitation of Ca/Mg at high pH |
| Compatibility | No reaction with calcium nitrate if used simultaneously | White precipitate, blocked emitters |
| Heavy metals | Within greenhouse crop safety limits | Phytotoxicity on sensitive crops |
Grade Selection by Crop Stage
| Crop Stage | Recommended WS Grade | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Seedling / establishment | NPK 20-20-20 + TE | Balanced nutrition with micronutrients for young plant establishment |
| Vegetative growth | NPK 19-19-19 or 25-10-10 | Higher N drives canopy and stem development |
| Flower initiation | NPK 10-30-20 or MKP (0-52-34) | High P stimulates root and flower bud development |
| Fruiting / fruit fill | NPK 15-5-30 or SOP (0-0-50) | High K drives fruit size, colour, and sugar accumulation |
| Throughout (calcium) | Calcium Nitrate (15.5-0-0 + 18.8 Ca) | Cell wall strength — prevents BER in tomato, tip burn in lettuce |
Injection Protocols for Commercial Fertigation
Proper injection sequencing prevents chemical precipitation in the fertigation system. Key rules for commercial operators:
- Never mix calcium nitrate with phosphate or sulphate fertilizers in the same stock tank — use separate tank A (calcium nitrate) and tank B (phosphates, potassium) and inject separately via a Venturi injector or pump proportioner
- Flush the system with clean water for at minimum 5 minutes after fertilizer injection — this prevents fertilizer concentration at emitter tips during shutdown
- Monitor system pressure across the filter: pressure drop indicates filter blockage from fertilizer residue or hard water scale
- Calibrate injection rate against target EC in the distribution line — EC meter at the lateral line should read target fertigation EC before water reaches crop roots
- Always use greenhouse-grade (GH-grade) water-soluble fertilizer — not technical-grade salts — to ensure low insoluble content and emitter safety
Bulk Procurement Considerations
Water-soluble fertilizers are more expensive per MT than granular grades and are typically procured in smaller quantities relative to granular commodities. However, the value-per-MT is significantly higher, making them an important category for distributors serving commercial greenhouse and plantation markets. Key procurement parameters:
- MOQ from Thailand suppliers: typically 5–25 MT per grade (1–2 pallets to one FCL)
- Packaging: 25 kg PE-lined bags — moisture protection is essential for crystalline WS fertilizers
- Storage: cool, dry, sealed warehouse. Crystalline WS fertilizers are hygroscopic and will cake rapidly if exposed to humidity above 60%
- Shelf life: 24 months from manufacturing date in sealed original packaging
- Documentation: COA must include solubility, EC, pH, N-P-K assay, and heavy metals for greenhouse crop safety compliance
How MC INTERNATIONAL S.P.A Supports Commercial Fertigation Buyers
We supply a complete range of water-soluble fertilizers — NPK 19-19-19, 20-20-20+TE, 15-5-30, calcium nitrate, MKP, and SOP — under ISO 9001:2015 quality controls with COA specifying solubility, EC, pH, and nutrient assay on every production batch. For greenhouse and fruit plantation distributors, we offer grade-specific fertigation programs developed with our agronomy team — covering stage-specific NPK programs, injection rate tables, and product compatibility guidance.
Private label packaging of water-soluble fertilizers is available for distributors building specialty product lines for their commercial greenhouse and plantation clients. Custom NPK ratios beyond our standard grades can be formulated on request with a minimum order of 5 MT.
